General Hitchcock Highway (Mt. Lemmon Highway, Arizona Forest Highway 39), Segment 7 Improvements
Federal Highway Administration
This roadway reconstruction project from milepost 11.2 to milepost 15.9 (7.6 kilometers) provides a wider, safer roadway with horizontal and vertical alignment modifications and extensive use of retaining walls for minimal impact on the rock formations that line the road. RSE's scope of work entailed the preparation of final design package, a centerline stakeout, a construction stakeout survey, design services during construction, landscape architecture and public relations. The project included three approach roads and six parking areas. The typical section is a width of 28 feet, a substantial improvement over the existing width of approximately 20 feet. Existing conditions addressed included narrow width with minimal shoulders, poor pavement condition, poor drainage, lack of sight distance, horizontal and vertical alignment that did not meet current criteria, and guardrail that did not meet current standards. Construction Cost: $14,000,000.
General Hitchcock Highway (Mt. Lemmon Highway, Arizona Forest Highway 39), Segment 6 Improvements
Federal Highway Administration
This roadway reconstruction project provided improvements from milepost 9.6 to 11.2 (2.6 kilometers) and milepost 15.9 to 20.8 (7.9 kilometers). For this segment, RSE provided metrification, survey, emergency survey and design, retaining wall modification, public relations, landscape architecture, and post-design services. This project used the visual prioritization levels (VPL) system where ratings are used to prioritize landscaped areas to keep the roadway visually pleasing while keeping costs down. Construction Cost: $16,500,000.
Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest and Lincoln National Forest Roads Analysis
USDA Forest Service, Southwestern Region
RSE performed a roads analysis and traffic study on the National Forest Systems Roads (NFSRs) in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest in east central Arizona and Lincoln National Forest in south central New Mexico. The work involved studies and field visits on approximately 166 miles of NFSRs and making recommendations to improve safety in respect to day and night time visibility, driving in both directions, and use patterns.
